Pink papers, news channels and everybody else in the business media are gasping breathlessly to outshout each other and report how everybody is getting into business. But what is the real story? Is entrepreneurship actually gaining pace? Or is it that it is concentrated in a few pockets? What sectors are people flocking to?

To answer these questions and some more we culled data from the corporate affairs ministry, and looked at them closely.

On the face of it, the numbers look impressive. More than 132,000 new companies were created in the 21 months between November 2013 and July 2015. On average, 6,200 firms every month. But a closer look reveals a stark divide between a few cities and the rest of India.

May we suggest you take a close look at the charts below? All of them have compelling stories to tell.

The interactive heat map provides a district-wise break up of numbers. Hover over or click individual districts for details. On a mobile device, pinch and zoom for a closer view.
